Elizabeth Florence Ekart 1938-2007

Born in the small rural community of Tikawiti, Waitako, Elizabeth Ekart had founded strong and lasting relationships with local Maori throughout the region along with her passion for education and the natural sciences. Elizabeth belived fervently in the dedication and provision of worth while and hands on educational method of learning rather than focusing on the theory of education being primary.

Elizabeth Ekarts devotion and dedication to the provision of practical education though not an accepted notion with education providers throughout the metropoliton regions of New Zealand, came on the heals of her second love which were the natural science, Astronomy and Geology became the subject matter and education her platform. Elizabeth's devotion for the search for truth through Astronomy fact and Geological proof gained her notiable acceptance within her local community as a well respected and dedicated scientist of her time.

 

The observatory was dedicated in her memory thus designated as The Elizabeth Ekart Observatory in 2008. In 2012 the final purchase of the observatories 25 Inch Classical Cassegrain Telescope was also named as the Elizabeth Ekart Telescope.
